Although they are often included in the same category, there is somewhat of a difference between an esthetician and a cosmetologist. While cosmetologists tend to focus on hair and skin care, including manicures and pedicures, estheticians usually go a little beyond that. They practice a variety of techniques including facials, hair removal, exfoliation, makeup artistry, and massage. Most estheticians train at specialized schools or vocational schools and programs that can take up to a year to complete. There are state requirements regarding certification and a good program can prepare the aspiring esthetician for these. Coursework might include safety and sanitation, theory, facial treatments, basic massage, and color theory.
